Seriously injured woman freed from wrecked car near Kutztown

GREENWICH TWP., Pa. - A woman was seriously injured when her car was hit head-on by a truck near Kutztown late Friday morning.

The accident was reported at 10:55 a.m. on Krumsville Road (Route 737), near Wiltrout Road, in Greenwich Township.

The driver of the truck, hauling a flatbed trailer and traveling south on Krumsville Road, said his brakes locked up, causing him to drift into the oncoming lane and hit the car. State police said speed appears to be a factor in the crash.

The badly damaged car came to rest partially off the road in front of a house. The driver was trapped in the wreckage for about 40 minutes until she could be freed by emergency crews using the jaws of life.

The victim, identified by state police as Marley Stalker-Stempel, 23, of Doylestown, Bucks Co., was conscious and alert at the scene, but she complained of severe leg pain, officials said. She was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, where she was last reported to be in critical condition.

The driver of the truck and the two occupants of a car that was struck by a tire that came off the trailer were not injured, police said.

The 19th century home adjacent to the accident scene was narrowly missed by the vehicles involved in Friday's crash, however, it suffered heavy structural damage when a pickup truck struck it last fall.

The driver in that crash was charged with driving under the influence. His blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit, police said.

The homeowners, who have lived in the home for 40 years, told WFMZ's Ryan Hughes on Friday that they just recently finished repairs and now want to move.
