BIRDSBORO, Pa. - Firefighters have gotten the upper hand on a 2-alarm fire in Berks County.
The fire broke out around 8:45 a.m. inside a home in the 100 block of North Walnut Street in Birdsboro.
Officials on the scene quickly struck a second alarm to bring in extra manpower.
At one point, flames were shooting through the roof as firefighters worked to save the large, 2-1/2 story brick home, located not far from East Main Street, also known as Route 724. They knocked down most of the fire within about 45 minutes.
No one was home at the time the fire started, but firefighters managed to rescue a dog, two cats and a ferret from the burning building; two other dogs, a guinea pig, a rabbit and several cats were killed in the fire, officials said.
Investigators are now trying to figure out what sparked the fire, which they believe started in the kitchen area of the home.
