Sinkhole forces medical center to close Monday

SPRING TWP., Pa. - The Reading Health System's Spring Ridge campus in Spring Township will resume normal operations Tuesday.

The campus remained closed Monday because of a massive sinkhole that opened Saturday.

Health system officials said they had to turn off electric and gas utilities while crews made repairs.

Spring Township officials said a broken water pipe appears to have caused the problem.

"It's unfortunate," said Jay Vaughan, the Spring Township manager. "Water lines do break from time to time. The earth does shift. Water tables go up and down. So the earth moves and it could have snapped a plastic water line off. It's not uncommon. We don't like to see it, naturally."

The Reading Health System said Monday's appointments will be rescheduled.
