Sleeping driver hits pole; police station, others lose power

AMITY TWP., Pa. - An accident has knocked out electricity to hundreds of Met-Ed customers in eastern Berks County, including the Amity Township Police Department.

The crash happened around 10:45 a.m. Thursday when the driver of a car fell asleep at the wheel and hit a pole at Old Swede Road and Aviemore Lane in Amity Township, police said.

The driver managed to escape serious injuries, police said.

Met-Ed reported that 1,353 of its customers in Amity and neighboring Earl Township were without electricity as a result of the accident.
