Snapped power line sparks brush fire in Ontelaunee

Nearly 1,600 Met-Ed customers lost electricity

ONTELAUNEE TWP., Pa. - A fallen power line triggered some trouble in Berks County on Tuesday.

The wire caught fire and broke off shortly before 1:30 p.m., igniting a brush fire on Route 222 Business at East Huller Lane in Ontelaunee Township.

Firefighters rolled in, but they had to wait for Met-Ed to respond and cut power to the energized line before they could put out the fire, officials said.

No one was injured and no property was damaged, but a 30-foot by 30-foot section of brush was scorched by the fire, officials said.

Met-Ed reported that 1,580 of its customers in neighboring Muhlenberg Township lost power as a result of the problem. Most of those customers had their power restored by 4 p.m.
