Snowmaking underway on slopes at Bear Creek in Berks

Resort has not yet set opening date

LONGSWAMP TWP., Pa. - While Berks County is expecting to see the season's first coating of snow this weekend, the folks at Bear Creek Mountain Resort are already making their own.

Snowmaking operations on the slopes in Longswamp Township, near Topton, began before dawn Friday morning and will continue at least through the weekend.

The resort said it will wait for a "few good nights/days of snow-making" before welcoming the return of winter-weather enthusiasts to the skiing, snowboarding and tubing trails.

The resort managed to open for the first time last year on December 16, but the winter was "filled with ups and downs," thanks to a couple of warm spells that suspended snow-related operations.

The year before was no better, with the trails not opening until late in the first week of January and closing for the season a bit earlier than normal.

Bear Creek employs approximately 1,400 seasonal employees.
