Stabbing prompts Wilson district to review school security

SPRING TWP., Pa. - Officials in the Wilson School District are taking a closer look at security in the wake of a stabbing Tuesday.

Emergency drills have become a necessity at school districts across the country.

"You try to make sure you have your information down and are correct, and our primary goal is to make sure students and staff are safe," said Rudy Ruth, the district's superintendent. "Just last week, we had done a practice drill that was a lock down drill."

The drill, Ruth said, helped immensely in keeping students and staff safe when the real deal happened at Wilson Southern Middle School on Tuesday morning.

"We heard from quite a few kids that, although they were scared because of the situation, they felt prepared. They knew what to do," said Ruth.

School officials managed to get students out of the building and reunited with their parents in less than two hours, Ruth said.

Ruth said he is now working closely with Spring Township police and other law enforcement officials to see what improvements can be made, just in case there is another emergency.

"You look at every single thing that you do and say, 'In what way can we shave off a little bit of time?'" said Ruth.

Counselors were on hand Wednesday to help the middle school students who needed it. Attendance was normal, Ruth said.

Despite some rumors, the school has no plans to ban backpacks, Ruth said.

"You can have every kind of safety measure you want in play, but there's a way around everything," said Ruth. "So what's going to be most important is that you have a really strong connection with the students that we work with. You develop relationships," said Ruth.
