Stay of execution granted for Sunday school teacher's killer

Michael Pruitt was scheduled to die on December 29

HARRISBURG, Pa. - One of Berks County's death row inmates has once again been spared his ultimate punishment.

A federal judge has granted a stay of execution for Michael Pruitt, who was convicted more than a decade ago of killing Greta Gougler inside her Reading home in 2002.

Pruitt, now 53, was scheduled to die by lethal injection on December 29. Pruitt, on death row since being sentenced on May 3, 2005, was previously set to be executed in 2009.

Gougler was a 69-year-old Sunday school teacher who was robbed, raped, and strangled inside her home on North Ninth Street.
