Strong storms cause flash flooding in Reading

READING, Pa. - Rain pounded the region Wednesday afternoon as severe storms swept across our area.

"It was coming really hard, really hard. This is crazy," said Gumersindo Torres of Reading.

Rain pummeled Berks County, filling streets and consuming cars.

"It was crazy. It really was crazy. It kind of comes out of nowhere. You have about 30 seconds, if you have stuff in your basement, get it out or if you have a car down there to move it," said Valarie Staats, who lives in the 400 block of Church Street in Reading.

Staats and her neighbors are used to flooding, but said the flash flood topped them all.

"I have been living here for 25 years, and the last time I saw a flood like that was like 15 years ago. It used to come up there like it did," said Johnny Corchado of Reading.

Basements filled with murky, muddy water, ruining everything in reach.

"My basement is a disaster right now," said Torres. "Everything is damaged down there, so everything has to go."

Residents said they believe the root of the problem is poor drainage.

"We looked down and you could see like a water fountain. The water was just coming up into the air and the next thing you know, the water was up to here, up to this step," said Rosia Castaneda of Reading.

They encourage the city to fix it, saying they cannot afford to live like this anymore.

"It is a lot of money. The economy is tough. People do not have that kind of money to keep replacing it," said Staats.

Police are urging drivers to use caution and not to drive through flooded roadways.
