Sugary blaze shuts down West Shore Bypass in Reading

Truck fire broke out about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday

READING, Pa. - A tractor trailer hauling sugar erupted in flames Wednesday night, closing a stretch of the West Shore Bypass in Reading for more than an hour.

The fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. in westbound lanes of Route 422, just east of the Lancaster Avenue interchange.

Reading fire officials told 69 News that the fire started near the truck's rear wheels. Some bags of sugar burned, while others melted.

All lanes of Route 422 were closed, while crews battled the blaze.

Both eastbound lanes reopened shortly before 11 p.m., and one westbound lane remained closed while crews worked to haul away the wreckage.

No injuries were reported, and it's unclear where the truck was headed. The tractor trailer was from a New Jersey-based trucking company.
