WEST READING, Pa. - Police in Berks County are preparing for thousands of people to pay their respects to a little girl who inspired the world.
The family of Delaney Brown, the West Reading girl who lost her battle with a rare form of cancer Christmas Day, has announced additional logistics for her public viewing.
The viewing for Laney is scheduled for Sunday from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Ave., West Reading.
West Reading's police chief, Stephen Powell, met with funeral directors Friday to finalize logistics for Sunday.
"We're going to close 8th Avenue, which is alongside the funeral home, starting at 1 p.m. Sunday in preparation for a lot of people on foot in that area," said Powell.
Public parking for the viewing will be available in the Vanity Fair Lee lot at North 8th and Penn avenues, across the street from the funeral home. Those attending the viewing are asked to enter from Park Road.
Overflow parking has been set aside at VF's Designer Place lot at North 8th and Reading avenues.
Powell said you can expect to see more officers on the street.
"We're working with Wyomissing police to make sure that we can do this as safely as possible and as efficiently as possible to provide the support the family deserves at this time," said Powell.
Laney's story and updates on the Team Laney Facebook page united the community. Between 6,000 and 10,000 people came out to sing Christmas carols last Saturday to fulfill her wish.
Now, the community is preparing to say goodbye.
"We were there through all of this, and to kind of close that chapter through all of us as well would be to show her family that kind of support that we showed when we came out to the caroling," said Tina Koch, who lives down the block from Laney's family.
In honor of Laney's "fashionista" style, the family is encouraging those in attendance to dress to impress by wearing bright colors.
The family also requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Laney's name to the Four Diamonds Fund, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, PO Box 852, Hershey, Pa., 17033.
