Teacher gets probation for indecent contact with student

Daniel Hornberger pleaded guilty in deal with DA

READING, Pa. - A high school teacher accused of having indecent contact with one of his students will spend the next seven years on probation.

Daniel Hornberger pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of institutional sexual assault as part of an agreement reached by his attorney and the Berks County district attorney's office.

Hornberger could have faced up to 14 years in prison if he had been convicted of the original charges, which were filed in July.

Hornberger was a longtime English teacher at Schuylkill Valley High School in Ontelaunee Township when he formed a relationship in 2017 with a then-17-year-old student.

His numerous encounters with the girl involved kissing and touching her breasts, according to prosecutors, who noted that his actions didn't go beyond "indecent contact."

Hornberger was suspended from his job when the allegations surfaced. He resigned in August, according to the district's superintendent.
