Thieves steal tools from community's haunted house

EXETER TWP., Pa. - At least one person is trying to take the fun out of an annual Halloween event for one Berks County community.

Someone forced entry into a haunted house that is under construction at the Trout Run Sports Complex in Exeter Township and took more than $1,000 worth of power tools that were being used for the project, police said.

"This is one of those crimes that just makes you want to shake your head," said Sgt. David Behm, Exeter Township Police Department.

The theft happened sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

"I left here at 9:30 at night and I locked them up, went home, came back the next day and realized that all the tools were missing," said Anthony, a local resident who owns the tools and, along with his family, has volunteered his time for the past 13 years to build the haunted house for area children and thrill-seekers.

The items stolen were:

  • Ryobi compound sliding miter saw
  • Ryobi angle grinder
  • Ryobi drill
  • Ryobi impact driver
  • Ryobi reciprocating saw
  • Ryobi work lights (2)
  • Ryobi air compressor
  • Pneumatic stapler
  • Dewalt Impact driver
  • Dry wall screws
  • Drill bits

What is most upsetting, Anthony said, is that the tools were used to benefit the community.

"You have an innocent volunteer with his own tools, his own time and his own energy trying to do something really nice for the community and he winds up becoming a victim of crime," added Behm.

Police said the lock on the door to the haunted house was pried open. Volunteers added that thieves also broke into a concession stand and stole sodas.

Proceeds from the attraction benefit local organizations and students.

"It also helps out the kids in high school, because they do their community service hours here," explained Anthony.

Police said they are looking into surveillance video and leads to track down the thieves.

Anyone with information about the theft can contact Exeter police at 610-779-1490 or Crime Alert Berks County via anonymous text to 847411, starting the message with keyword alertberks.

Tips can also be reported to Crime Alert online or by phone at 877-373-9913.

A cash reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.

The haunted house is part of a Halloween tradition in Exeter Township. It's still scheduled to be open this Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6:30 p.m. until 10 p.m., with more family-friendly version on Friday and Saturday. The cost to enter is $4.

Family hayrides will also be run Friday and Saturday, with a haunted version featured on Sunday.
