Township votes in favor of disbanding regional police force

MAXATAWNY TWP., Pa. - The future of the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department is even more uncertain.

The Maxatawny Township Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Wednesday night in favor of disbanding the force.

The vote means the township's representative on the regional police board will move to disband the department when the board meets March 19.

Last week, the department's biggest financial backer, Upper Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co., voted to establish its own police force at the start of next year.

Maxatawny Township officials said they're discussing forming their own police force and also exploring police coverage from a neighboring municipality.
