Traffic stop leads to drug bust in West Reading

WEST READING, Pa. - A Berks County man's failure to use his turn signal ultimately led to him being put behind bars.

Police said they stopped Richard Ortiz for failing to use his turn signal as he entered and exited the Delaney traffic circle in West Reading on Saturday.

Ortiz, who was found to be driving with a suspended license, consented to a search of his car, according to court documents released Monday.

That search, police said, turned up a pill bottle full of suspected methadone, a sock with two bags of bulk heroin, and an assortment of drug paraphernalia, including a box with several hundred unused glassine packets, another box with several hundred rubber bands, and three metal sifters for mixing heroin.

Ortiz also had 15 bags of heroin on him, police said.

Ortiz, 49, of West Reading, was arraigned on various drug charges and driving violations. He was committed to the Berks County Jail on $100,000 bail.
