Traffic stop, response draw attention in downtown Reading

Gun, marijuana found inside SUV, police say

READING, Pa. - What's being described by police as a "routine traffic stop" caused quite a commotion in downtown Reading on Friday.

The stop of an SUV in the 600 block of Penn Street before 10 a.m. drew the response of at least a dozen RPD officers, with their parked patrol vehicles stretching from Sixth Street to Seventh Street.

At the same time, a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter hovered overhead, drawing even more attention to the scene, but police told 69 News that the chopper's presence was unrelated to the stop.

Meanwhile, dozens of people stopped what they were doing to watch the police activity from the sidewalks on both sides of the street and from the surrounding office buildings.

What they witnessed were officers searching the SUV and taking a man into custody. Police told 69 News that they found marijuana and a gun inside the vehicle. They have not yet released the man's name or the charges he is facing.

Travel on Penn Street was slow-going through the area, causing traffic to back up several blocks in both directions until the scene was cleared.
