Tulpehocken boys, Mifflin girls grab District soccer wins

Tulpehocken boys, Mifflin girls earn District soccer wins

The (7) Tulpehocken boys made a long playoff run last year, a run that put them in Hershey with silver medals hanging around their necks.  They're hoping to make the same kind of run this year, both in the district and state tournaments.  Districts started Monday night for the Trojans at home against Hamburg.

The tenth-seeded Hawks looked prime to pull an upset early on. Steven Maenza tallied a first half break away goal to give Hamburg a 1-0 lead they would hold through halftime.

But Tulpehocken battled back in the second half. About five minutes into the half, Brandon Daub laced a shot off the crossbar that fell down and across the line for the equalizer.

The stalemate would go into overtime. Tulpehocken nearly ended it when a Garrett Latimer header nailed the crossbar and trickled off to the side of the net.

The contest would be decided in penalty kicks. The first five players from each team made their kicks, so it came down to a sixth frame.

In that frame, Hamburg's Bailey Koehn sent his attempt just over the goal. That allowed Matthew Kerber to step up and bury the game winner.

The 2-1 win for Tulpehocken moves them onto the quarterfinals, where they will face (2) York Suburban Thursday.

In Shillington, the fifth-seeded Governor Mifflin girls cruised to a victory over (12) Dallastown.

Emily Gingrich led the way with a goal and an assist. Zoe Galvin and Ella Jones also recorded goals on the night.

The Mustangs' victory sends them to the quarterfinals where they will meet (4) Conestoga Valley on Thursday.
