Two brush fires break out in Reading along Schuylkill River

Crews battle brush fires along Schuylkill River in Reading

READING, Pa. - Two brush fires were reported along the Schuylkill River in Reading on Tuesday night.

Crews were dispatched around 8:30 p.m. to a brush fire in the area of Penske, between the West Shore Bypass and Riverfront Drive.

Fire crews had a tough time getting to the area, and to make matters worse, the air unit that could have dropped water from above was not available.

Reading police shut down the westbound lanes of West Shore Bypass between the Lancaster Avenue and Penn Avenue interchanges.

The fire spanned about two-and-a-half acres and wood from the fallen trees served to only fuel the flames, said officials, who noted that it's still too early to determine the cause of the fire.
