2 shootings, 1 deadly, rock Reading right before Christmas

READING, Pa. - A pair of shootings, one deadly, rocked Reading right before Christmas.

The first shooting happened late Saturday afternoon in the 1600 block of Perkiomen Avenue.

Elmer Maldonado of Reading died after being shot multiple times, police said.

At last check, no one was in custody, and there's no word yet on a possible motive.

Anyone with information is asked to call Reading police or Crime Alert Berks County.

Then, just hours later, there was another shooting at South Fourth and Spruce streets.

So far, police have not provided any information about that shooting, although emergency communication officials confirmed the report of a shooting in that area overnight.

A 69 News viewer who was at the Reading Hospital emergency room overnight said she heard someone talking hysterically about a shooting.

She said there were several police cars parked outside the emergency room. It's unclear if her account is related to the shooting at South Fourth and Spruce.

Following the first shooting on Saturday, 69 News spoke with a nearby resident, who said he's frustrated with violence in the city.

"I feel like Reading is getting bad out here," Joshua Viera said. "People should stay indoors, stay with their family."
