Undercover investigation leads to prostitution bust in Cumru

'I think it stuck out like a sore thumb,' DA says

CUMRU TWP., Pa. - The owner of a day spa in Berks County has been arrested on prostitution charges.

Cumru Township police and detectives with the Berks County district attorney's office moved in on Samantha's Day Spa in the 300 block of East Wyomissing Avenue on Wednesday.

"There was a lot of looks, thumbs up, thankful waves that we were there and we were taking care," said Chief Madison Winchester, Cumru Township Police Department.

Authorities arrested Maria Roleda Bey for allegedly agreeing twice to perform sexual acts on an undercover detective in exchange for money.

The investigation of the business began in January after law enforcement said it received complaints about possible prostitution.

"I think it stuck out like a sore thumb, and people complained," said District Attorney John Adams. "Places like this seem to come to our attention rather quickly."

A search of the spa Wednesday afternoon led detectives to seize various items associated with "the utilization and facilitation of the act of prostitution."

Bey, 44, of Reading, was arraigned and then freed on $10,000 unsecured bail; four other employees of the spa were detained and later released, detectives said.

The investigation continues and additional arrests are possible, according to the DA's office.
