US Marshals nab armed fugitive after nearly 5-hour search

LYNN TWP., Pa. - A five-hour search of woods along the border between Berks and Lehigh counties ended with the U.S. Marshals arresting an armed fugitive.

Harvey Shaner was expected to surrender to federal authorities on Monday to begin serving a 51-month prison sentence after pleading guilty in a 2016 fraud case.

Shaner, however, told court officials on Wednesday that he would not turn himself in and was, instead, going to kill himself.

Around 4 p.m. Thursday, U.S. Marshals tracked Shaner to his girlfriend’s home in the 7600 block of Dresher Road in Lynn Township, Lehigh County.

Shaner fled the home before they could apprehend him, taking with him a .357 handgun, officials said.

Shaner, 51, didn't get very far. He was arrested less than five hours later after emerging from a wooded area off Dresher Road. Plainclothes officers spotted him, gave chase on foot, and took him into custody after a brief pursuit.

No U.S. Marshals were harmed.
