READING, Pa. - While the world watches as the days wind down before President Donald Trump's first 100 days in office, freshman U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker has already completed his.

"It's like starting a new business almost," said Smucker, a Republican who represents Pennsylvania's 16th District, which includes part of Berks County.."You build an organization where you put staff together. You literally have the logistics of opening an office, finding the space putting everything together and so it takes some time."

Smucker knows business. He was the CEO of a Lancaster County-based construction company before becoming a state senator. He was elected to his first term in Congress in November.

"It's really about building the economy, growing the economy, creating an environment where jobs are being created which creates those opportunities," he said.

He said he's also got his ear close to the phone to hear form his constituents.

"We literally have received in three months 50,000 contacts from people who live in the district," Smucker said.

Heath care, tax reform and improving what he calls a "regulatory environment" that holds people and businesses back: those are the issues he said were the focus of his campaign, setting the tone for his first term.

"We're advancing those goals, which I think will move our country in the right direction, so it's exciting," he said.
