USPS plans to sell downtown Reading post office, annex

READING, Pa. - The United States Post Office is further planning to downsize its operations in Berks County.

The USPS wants to sell its main post office at 59 N. 5th St. in center city and its carrier annex at 1910 N. 5th St., according to a letter from Richard Hancock, a USPS real estate specialist, to Reading Mayor Vaughn Spencer.

"It is just convenient because I only live right up the street and I do not drive," said Christian Arellano, a frequent customer of the downtown post office. "I am used to this location here. It depends if it went farther it would probably be an issue."

The downtown post office would be replaced by a smaller retail location as close as possible to the current facility, Hancock said.

"Our operations and requirements analysts have determined that we need a retail facility with, ideally, approximately 3,000 square feet of interior space with suitable support, parking and maneuvering areas," Hancock said.

"It would not affect me that much. It would just be a change," said Francsco Delgado.

Mail carriers currently based at the downtown post office and at the North 5th Street annex, would be relocated to the Gus Yatron Postal Facility on North 13th Street, officials said.

The Yatron facility has undergone its own changes in recent months. A decline in mail volume forced the post office to consolidate mail processing operations and end that work in Reading. The changes were expected to save the USPS $7.2 million dollars each year, officials said.

The post office plans to present its proposed changes to City Council at its meeting next Mon., Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
