Warm weather a welcome relief to harsh winter in Berks

LEESPORT, Pa. - A mild Monday will lead to an even warmer Tuesday, and it's safe to say the countdown to spring is officially on.

Landscaping crews have been working right through the cold, but the warmup has them shifting their focus to Spring.

"I'm sure if we had the crew stand behind me they would be cheering for Spring," said Lori Anewalt, owner of Anewalt's Landscape Contracting in Bern Township.

A mountain in the back of Anewalt's property shows they've been busy plowing and hauling away snow, but like many others they're looking forward to the end of winter, and now they can see the finish line.

"They are ready to go they've had enough of snow they want to see the weather switch," said Anewalt.

You can call this transition time. On Monday, workers were busy chopping up wood from trees that suffered damage, and they were getting their trucks prepared for the spring cleanup.

The calls have been coming in for work, and the company schedules appointments year-round. Now, all they need is the weather to cooperate.

"We certainly have to wait for the snow to be completely melted off and even after that the ground is so saturated," said Brett Morris, superintendent for Anewalt's.

It's been non-stop for the workers since early December.

"In my 20 years of being with the company I've never seen a winter like this," said Anewalt.

Crews rolled right from fall to winter without a break, and now they're getting ready to jump right into spring.

"There's a lot of tree damage that probably sustained throughout the winter that's going to be on the front burner for a lot of our clients," said Morris.
