Weis, Smithfield Foods donate to Greater Berks Food Bank

SPRING TWP., Pa. - The Greater Berks Food Bank has received a large donation.

The food bank took in more than 37,000 pounds of food, all donated by Weis Markets and Smithfield Foods.

Officials said Friday's donation will go far in Berks County.

"In this region, one in seven people live in food-insecure households. Of that number, half of them are children," said Dennis Curtin, a Weis spokesman.

Officials said the donation is equal to about 150,000 meals.
