Wilson closes two elementary schools

LOWER HEIDELBERG TWP., Pa. - Second grader, Frankie Giuffre, was all smiles at dismissal, Monday afternoon, but he said there is a lot he will miss about Lincoln Park Elementary.

"There's a lot you can play with here because we have a nice playground in the back," said Frankie.

But at the end of this school year, Frankie will have get used to the playground at another school.

Monday night, the Wilson School District voted to close Lincoln Park and West Wyomissing Elementary Schools, officials said.

Students will now be split between three elementary schools in the district.

The move is financially necessary, and the student that get transferred will continue to thrive, school officials said.

"The quality of the education of the schools that they are moving to will stay the same. That it was a decision that was prudent and in the best interest of the taxpayers of the Wilson School District," said Jason Hopp, school board member.

But some parents say the school closures will change their neighborhoods.

"I actually moved here four years ago for the benefit of these schools, because it was such a quaint, nice community, and they've taken it and pulled the rug from underneath of me," said Shawn McAnany.

Extra classrooms will be built to accommodate the students that get transferred, school officials said.

"Wilson School District is a top-rate, grade A school district, and those students moving into the elementary schools will receive such a great education," said Hopp.

But some students say the change will still be tough.

"I don't want to go because I want to stay, but I have to go because it's going to close," said Frankie.

The new changes will take effect at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year, school administrators said.
