Witness: Man's body found in Berks Co. creek

Body found in Lower Alsace

LOWER ALSACE TWP., Pa. - A man's body was found in the creek that flows under Carsonia Avenue in the Pennside section of Lower Alsace Twp., Berks Co.

The people who live in the home next to the creek made the discovery around 7 p.m. Thursday.

The two Spiers boys watched every move the police made outside their window on Carsonia Avenue, but it's not the only sight 5-year-old Chase will remember. It's typical for him and his mom to check on possible flooding after it rains.

"I just walked over to watch it and we saw a dead body laying in the creek," said Tonya Spiers, who was holding Chase in her arms when she made the discovery.

"A black man, just with the water running all over him, and he was definitely dead because he's blue," said Spiers.

She thought Chase saw his shoes.

"He's okay. I don't think he saw as much as I saw because as soon as we saw, I just took off and started running," said Spiers, who called 911.

Spiers described the man as being in his 50s, fully dressed and weighing about 200 pounds.

"I was out here yesterday cutting grass and pulling weeds and that was not there," said Spiers.

Police said the man suffered head trauma, but they still haven't determined how he ended up in the creek. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

"I'd like to know. I have no idea," said Spiers. "I don't know him, never seen him before. I have no idea."

Spiers said she doesn't mind the police surrounding her home, even if the investigation took all night.

"As long as they figure out what happens and who the guy is," said Spiers.

Central Berks police officers spent about four hours on the scene. They are still working on this case. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.
