Woman hit by vehicle while waiting by stalled car

EXETER TWP., Pa. - Police in Berks County are investigating a pedestrian accident that sent a woman to the hospital.

It happened around 6 a.m. Monday in the eastbound lanes of the 6300 block of Perkiomen Avenue, which is also Route 422, in Exeter Township.

A 26-year-old Exeter woman, identified by police as Sarah Schmuck, was standing by her disabled car on the right side of the road when another vehicle hit her and the car, police said.

The driver of the other car was a 31-year-old Blandon man, said police, who added that it appears the stalled car was in the travel lane at the time of the accident.

Schmuck had to be rescued from under the vehicle. She was taken to Reading Hospital, where she was last reported to be in critical condition.

Residents who live near the crash told 69 News that drivers travel fast and carelessly down the route's hills.

"They speed a lot going through," said Casey Granger, whose bus stop is just feet away from the accident site.

Granger said his family has asked the township in recent years to add extra traffic signs near the crash site.

Route 422 was closed for several hours while police investigated the accident.
