Work on Antietam Lake house to close Angora Road on Friday

Preparations being made for home's demolition

LOWER ALSACE TWP., Pa. - Preliminary work to demolish a home overlooking Antietam Lake in Berks County will force a detour of anyone planning to drive around the lake on Friday.

Officials said crews will remove the bay windows from the former caretaker's house that sits above Angora Road in Lower Alsace Township.

As a precaution, Angora Road will be closed to traffic between Antietam and Hill roads from 7:30 a.m. until sometime Friday afternoon, officials said.

Officials said the long-vacant house is in an advanced stage of deterioration and has no historic value. Its demolition is one of the last pieces of improvements the county has made to the 643-acre park since 2005, when it began to assume ownership of the lake and its surrounding land.

No date has been set for demolition, but officials told 69 News that they expect it to happen within the next two months. The work is not to exceed $12,500, officials said.
