Bicycist injured in hit and run accident in Allentown

Victim was dragged for 1/2 mile

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A bicyclist is recovering after being hit by a car; the driver fled the scene, police said.

The accident happened Sunday night around 10:20 p.m. near the intersection of Hanover Avenue and Linden Street, near Overlook Park in Allentown.

Police said 20-year-old Jermaine Rivera of Broad Street in Bethlehem was riding his bike on the sidewalk on Hanover and crossing over East Linden when a car driven by 24-year-old Sachariel Polanco hit Rivera.

Rivera was thrown from his bike and hit the pavement, police said; the bike remained stuck under the car and was dragged for about a half mile.

Polanco, of the 100 block of N. Brook Street in Allentown, was not in the car but did turn himself in to police a short time later, police said.

Polanco is charged with accident involving death or serious injury, immediate notice of accident involving injury to police, reckless driving, driving while operating on a suspended or revoked license, duty to render aid and careless driving involving serious bodily injury.
