Breast Cancer part six: Moving forward

Breast Cancer part six: Moving forward

Since Monday we've been showing you how breast cancer has impacted two sisters and their families

Now here's a look at how they're moving forward, one step at a time.

"You don't realize until you go through it, how many people it affects," said Chrissy Gieringer.

On a crisp Autumn morning in October, a family reunion takes shape at Allentown's Lehigh Parkway.

Some are bonded by blood.

All are bonded by the battle that was thrust upon them.

"I never expected to be here, no," said Deb Sipics.

"Before we were diagnosed, I didn't know anyone with breast cancer. Now I know so many people," said Gieringer.

Sisters Chrissy Gieringer and Deb Sipics are among the thousands of women who put on the pink on this particular day.

They're joined by the same friends and family who've helped them endure the ups and downs that followed the devastating diagnosis.

"Last year we did it for her, this year everyone is doing it for the two of us. I guess I'm a first time survivor," said Gieringer.

A sisterhood of survivors swells around them on the walking course.

Women who, like them, are at the beginning of their life and death struggle clash with cancer.

"To see so many people here who you can relate to, it's a little emotional from that standpoint," said Sipics.

And women who've already walked a mile in those shoes.

"I just want everyone to be healthy next year.  I want to keep moving forward in that survivor's parade where eventually I'm up at the 20-year survivor," said Sipics.

For now, it's one step at a time.

One day at a time as Deb and Chrissy make their way to the front of the pack.
