Breinigsville man killed in crash on Route 222

UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - A 77-year-old man was killed in a crash in western Lehigh County on Monday.

The accident, involving two tractor trailers and a minivan, happened around 9:30 a.m. in the 9200 block of Hamilton Boulevard, at Newtown Road, in Upper Macungie Township.

The minivan, driven by James Knappenberger, of Breinigsville, was stopped in the northbound lane at the intersection when a tractor trailer, driven by Oliver Savage, 56, of Tall Timbers, Md., couldn't stop and hit the back of the minivan.

The impact pushed the minivan into the southbound lane, where it was hit by another tractor trailer, driven by Sidney Huntoon, 70, of Bath, Northampton Co.

Knappenberger died at the scene, officials said. No one else was injured.

Both lanes of Hamilton Boulevard were closed between Breinigsville Road and the Berks County line.

Huntoon's 18-wheeler sustained a fuel leak, which prompted a call to the Department of Environmental Protection.

The investigation is ongoing. Any witnesses to the accident are asked to call Upper Macungie Township police.
