WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - Business at a Whitehall bakery and deli isn't slowing down despite a startling incident Friday.
Employees at Soumaya and Sons Bakery and Deli said a woman drove her car through the front of the building. They said nobody was injured in the incident, which happened just after noon Friday.
"It took me a second to realize what was going on until I got over there and saw there was a car inside the building," said Jason Ballan, whose family has run the business in the area for more than 30 years. They've been at their current location on Fullerton Avenue for ten years, according to Ballan.
"I had customers eating lunch at the time and I saw a lot of them just jump back and their seats flew," he said.
Joanna Ballan was also working at the time of the crash. "We thought something had exploded and I just couldn't believe it," she said.
"I saw the car just come up and go right through the wall," she added.
The family decided to keep the business open Friday as crews started repairs on the building. Dr. Austin Sedicum, a customer, said there was quite a commotion going on when he showed up and found Ballan. "I said, 'well I guess this is a bad time to talk, you're not going to be doing business.' He said, 'no we're always in business, go around the back, I'll meet you inside.'"
"They don't ever let anybody down, 35 years. They're the best," said Dr. Sedicum.
"It's more like our customers have become family," said Joanna Ballan.
Police say the circumstances of Friday's incident are under investigation.
