NEWARK, NJ -

The filing deadline has passed for a special election in New Jersey. Six candidates will run for the U.S. Senate seat held by the late Frank Lautenberg.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker, State Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver and Congressmen Rush Holt and Frank Pallone will vie for the Democratic nomination in an August primary. Former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan and a doctor are the two Republican contenders.

The special election is set for October. Meantime, Jeff Chiesa was sworn in this afternoon as Lautenberg's interim replacement.

The Republican had been New Jersey's Attorney General.
