Copper theft forces lockdown at 3 schools

Copper theft leads to dangerous gas leak

HAMBURG, Pa. -

Three schools were placed on lockdown on Friday as police were frantically searching for a copper thief.

Hamburg High School, Hamburg Middle School and Tilden Elementary were on lockdown for four hours on Friday.

Ryan Joseph Young, of Bethlehem, was arrested in connection with the massive copper theft at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum, officials said.

Copper was stolen from six railcars and two locomotives, and the theft caused about $15,000 in damage, police said.

The theft is a devastating blow for the museum in the holiday season.

"I would say its disappointing when good will unto others is supposed to be a motto for the season," said Tim Weidner, a museum representative.

Weidner said the nonprofit will rely on donations to recover from the loss.
