SILVER SPRING TWP., Pa. -

A mess of melons put the brakes on Independence Day traffic near Harrisburg.

A pickup truck hauling watermelons overturned around 11 a.m. Friday in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81, near the Route 114/Mechanicsburg interchange, in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, state police said.

Dozens of watermelons spilled out of the truck, breaking open and littering a stretch of the highway with sticky debris.

Crews worked about an hour to clean up the mess and reopen the northbound lanes.

State police could provide no information about injuries.
