DA: 2 bilked philanthropist Linny Fowler of more than $1M

Two arrested for stealing from Linny Fowler

EASTON, Pa. - They told heartbreaking stories to get money from one of the Lehigh Valley's top philanthropists.

Only investigators say those stories were lies.

Two people are now behind bars for allegedly scamming the late UPS heiress Linny Fowler out of more than a million dollars.

The Northampton County district attorney says Fowler had a soft spot for helping children and minorities.

And that one couple used it to live a life of luxury.

Hassan and Shawnta Carmon of Allentown were living a charmed life.

A glamorous couple who took Las Vegas vacations and shopped at the finest stores.

That's Shawnta dressed in Gucci from head to toe.

But the only problem is, the Northampton County District Attorney says one-point-one million dollars of money used to bankroll their lavish lifestyle was stolen from late UPS heiress Linny Fowler of Bethlehem.

" Mrs. Fowler was such a generous woman that she was susceptible to hearing hard luck stories," said Morganelli.

And what stories they did tell.

According to a grand jury indictment, from 2008 to 2012  Shawnta asked for money for dental and medical bills.

The now estranged couple telling Fowler their daughter needed jaw surgery and then a heart transplant.

They also allegedly asked for money to send their niece to college and cash for a car.

But the D.A. says none of those stories were true.

John Morganelli says the couple spent all of the money to live large.

"When confronted with the evidence Shawnta Carmon admitted her conduct," said Morganelli.

Morganelli says his office was investigating another alleged charitable theft in November.

That's when Fowler told them she had suspicions about the Carmons.

This money was squandered by these individuals and Mrs. Fowler's money has been used  for so many good purposes that a million dollars could have helped a lot of people or other organizations.

The couple is now staying at the less luxurious Northampton County Prison and will be back in court next month.
