DA thanks county leaders for helping uncover alleged fraud

READING, Pa. - The Berks County Commissioners are getting a big pat on the back.

During their meeting Thursday, District Attorney John Adams thanked them for their help in uncovering an alleged case of fraud.

Earlier this week, federal charges were filed against former Recorder of Deeds Ellie Antoine. The feds said she embezzled more than $150,000 between 2004 and 2007.

When he became district attorney in 2008, Adams said he was immediately approached about the allegations.

"I can't say enough about the commitment that our present board of commissioners made to root out the fraud," said Adams.

Adams said other county officials, including the current recorder of deeds, helped with the investigation.

Antoine's attorney, meantime, said his client looks forward to being found not guilty at trial.
