UNION TWP., Pa. - Another school in the Daniel Boone Area School District is facing the threat of being closed.
The school board voted 5-4 Monday night in favor of beginning the process of considering whether to close the Birdsboro Elementary Center.
School officials have cited declining enrollment and increasing maintenance costs as some of the reasons they would have for closing the school.
Relocating students to other schools in the district could potentially reduce expenses, officials said.
The Birdsboro borough manager, Aaron Durso, however, said he believes the cost of relocating students would far exceed that of the maintenance costs. Durso said he doesn't believe the district has the data to support closing the school.
A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for March 24.
The board voted last year to close the Amity Primary Center. The move was estimated to save the district $500,000 each year.
