Drunk driver charged with assaulting officer, police say

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - A drunk driver also faces charges he assaulted an officer and resisted arrest, police said.

Police in Hackettstown, Warren Co., N.J., received a report of a possible intoxicated driver traveling south on Route 517 toward Hackettstown, around 6 p.m. Saturday.

Officers located the car in question on Route 46 and pulled over the car.

The driver was identified as 43-year-old David Brotzman of Easton, Pa.

When police tried to get Brotzman out of the car, Brotzman grabbed the steering wheel and wedged his foot into the door jam to avoid being removed from the car, police said.

At police headquarters, Brotzman spit on an officer and also kicked a table into that officer, police said.

Brotzman was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and related charges.

He was unable to post $1,000 bail and was taken to the Warren County Correctional Facility.
