Experts: Bedbugs On The Rise Across United States

Bed bugs may be making a resurgence all across the United States, from residences, to public housing, to hotels, to group living facilities.

Experts say the resurgency is due to bed bugs coming overseas.

"Bed bugs were pretty much eliminated in this country after the war with different pesticides. But elsewhere in the world they continue to thrive," said Louise Bugby, from Extension Education Leigh County.

At an educational seminar held at the Agricultural Center in Bern Township, Bugby explained that often people dealing with bed bugs don't seek out help for shame.

"Because of the taboo that people think only dirty people get bed bugs, and that's not the case," said Bugby.

Experts say most times bed bugs latch on to someone's belongs, and that's how they gain access to your home.

Bugby says bed bugs can be spotted with the naked eye. And adult bed bugs may be the size of an apple seed. But you might be hardpressed to find them during the day.

"They would tend to be inside the box spring, behind the pictures on the pictures on the walls, behind the headboards. They're not going to be out walking on the floor in the middle of the day, they come out at night," said Bugby.

Experts add that if you do spot evidence of bed bugs on your bed sheets, can put the sheets in the dryer for about 30 minutes on high, and that should kill the bed bugs in any state.
