Explosion at Carbon County home ruled an accident

KIDDER TWP., Pa. - An explosion and fire that killed a woman and injured a man in Carbon County have been ruled an accident.

According to Kidder Township Police, a damaged propane line within the crawl space area of the house led to a propane gas explosion. It happened at a house on Tobyhanna Street in Lake Harmony Monday afternoon. What sparked the explosion and fire is not known but but the fire marshal said an electrical appliance is likely to blame.

Police identify the victim as 29-year-old Melissa Barwis of Albrightsville. The cause of death is thermal trauma. Authorities said her boyfriend, 40-year-old Bruce Barberio of Albrightsville, was injured and is getting treatment at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Police said the two were caretakers of the house and the owners are from Richboro.

Police said after the explosion a neighbor hurt her back trying to help Barberio out of the garage.
