Father, son fight leads to charges for both

Dad faces an assault charge, while the son had been drinking and firing shots

U. MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - A Lehigh County father and son are facing charges after an early-morning fight at their Upper Macungie Township home.

Township police were dispatched to a home in the 7000 block of Rupsville Road just after 4 a.m. Saturday to investigate a report of two men arguing and gunshots. When officers arrived, they found Dean Shook Jr. at the rear of the property with bruising and redness on his neck, according to court records.

He was also holding a rifle that he dropped after being ordered to do so by police. The rifle's safety was off, the magazine was loaded and a live round was in the chamber, police said.

The 20-year-old told police that he did fire a few rounds and that he was "patrolling the area." Police determined that he had been drinking earlier in the night.

A witness reported hearing Shook and another man arguing before hearing three gunshots in quick succession, prompting a call to 911.

The argument reportedly lasted about an hour before police were called.

When township police arrived at the house, the elder Shook had left the house. An "extremely disheveled" Dean Shook later returned, while authorities were still at the home.

Police charged the 47-year-old with simple assault and harassment, while the son faces a disorderly conduct charge and a summary offense for alcohol consumption by a minor.

District Judge Michael D'Amore arraigned the pair Saturday, setting bail for Dean Shook at $10,000. He failed to post bail and was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing tentatively scheduled for Oct. 17.
