Friends question motive behind fatal stabbing

Questions remain over fatal stabbing

MOORE TWP., Pa. - Why did one man allegedly murder his best friend on a remote farm? That's what those who knew the suspect and the victim in Friday's killing in Northampton Co. are asking themselves.

"Everyone is speechless," said Nick Cavallo, longtime friends with both men.

Rich Parker and Andy Hess were car guys, according to Cavallo. They were best friends for years and often seen together at auto shows.

But that all ended violently early Friday morning on a farm in Moore Township, Northampton Co. According to police, Hess admitted he stabbed Parker inside his friend's storage unit.

Court records called it a "relationship matter" involving Hess' one-time girlfriend, Jessica Drake. Police say Drake was at the storage unit at the time, but she has not been charged.

"They were two peas in a pod," Cavallo said of the two men. "They were best friends for awhile. I mean, we're going years back."

Cavallo says he had just spoken to Hess days earlier and saw no major red flags. He said Hess is a non-violent person.

"It's odd because it's like there's pieces missing," said Cavallo. "He didn't mention any problems with Rich whatsoever … Him and his girlfriend -- he said that, they weren't fighting or anything like that. He was just bummed out. He really didn't tell me what was going on."

Cavallo said he didn't know if there was any kind of relationship between Drake and Parker.

"I didn't know anything about maybe Rich seeing the girl," he said.

Cavallo said, if there were problems, he wishes his friend had come to him or anyone else to talk.

"There was two lives -- one was thrown away and one was taken," said Cavallo. "It's just insane."

Hess is currently being held at the Northampton County Prison without bail.

His preliminary hearing is set for July 25 at 9:30 a.m.
