Gang of shoplifters run amok

MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. - A gang of female shoplifters invaded a large retail store and stole thousands of dollars in merchandise, police said.

The crime took place on Sat., Nov. 24, at a large retail store on the North 5th Street Highway in Muhlenberg Twp., Berks Co. The store that was hit requested not to be named, police said.

All of the suspected female shoplifters were captured on surveillance cameras as they were leaving the store. One of the images even shows a woman who appears to be pregnant.

Shoppers near the store that was hit were shocked.

"One of them was pregnant? Like that's a disgrace to your child. Like that's disgraceful," said Talia Dianna, of Cumru Township.

"They're crazy," said Derrick Shaub, of Muhlenberg Township.

Investigators said the women stole televisions, video games, bedding and movies, all totaling $2,700.

Police said the trend of stealing in groups is alarming and becoming all too familiar in our region.

"The amount that they get away with, when groups are doing it, as opposed to one person, the amounts are increasing, and they can get into the thousands of dollars," said Sgt. Andy Swoyer, Muhlenberg Twp., Police Dept.

Information is still scarce, but authorities are hoping someone will recognize the women in the surveillance images and call police.

Anybody with information on the gang of alleged shoplifters is asked to call Crime Alert: Berks County immediately. The number is 877-373-9913.
