CARLISLE, Pa. - Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets have announced that they have removed a certain brand of pre-packaged Peanut Butter and Jam Sandwich from the shelves. Pierre Food has recalled its crust-less Peanut Butter and Strawberry "Jamwiches" for a possible Listera contamination.
The product in question comes in a 12-count red carton and is sold in the freezer section of the store with a "best if purchased date" of March 11, 2011. The UPC code on the product is 7599921368.
If you have any of these items in your freezer, Giant says that you should throw them away and take the receipt back to the store for a full refund.
Ingesting food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, which is a potentially fatal disease. Rarely contracted by healthy people, it can cause high fever, severe headaches, nick stiffness and nausea. it can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths. It can even cause serious and possibly fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems.
Giant and Martin Foods have not received any reports of illness due to this product.
