ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A man is in critical condition after Allentown Police say he was shot in the back in broad daylight. While the victim lies in the hospital, police are hunting for the triggerman.
Investigators combed the scene Wednesday, the 700 block of Washington Street marked off in yellow tape.
Around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, neighbor Ray Laudenslager says he heard gun shots.
"I got off the phone, came out here, there was nothing," explained Laudenslager. "My neighbor said there was a body on the floor."
Allentown police say a 27-year-old man was shot at least once in the back. He was seriously wounded.
"Several people were on their cell phones but nobody called police, so after two or three minutes I called the police and they showed up," said Laudenslager.
Investigators say the man was driven to Sacred Heart Hospital in a private vehicle, then taken by ambulance to the Lehigh Valley Hospital trauma center. The man was listed in critical condition.
A shooting in the middle of the afternoon has folks living nearby thankful there weren't any other victims.
"There be a lot of kids on this block," shared Kristina Colon. "Coming home from school and stuff, there's a lot of kids who go through here."
"It woulda hit our house if he woulda missed him," added Laudenslager.
He says the crime is so bad that he and his wife are getting ready to move out of Allentown, a place they've called home for 26 years.
"I wish we could do it right now and just get out of here. I mean it's, Allentown's just not safe."
At this time police have not released a motive in the shooting. They say no suspects have been arrested.
