Hit-and-run investigation ends in drug arrest

Allentown police said they found K2, meth, heroin and cash

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - While investigating a hit-and-run crash last week, Allentown police found a Bethlehem man hiding in a closet along with heroin, synthetic marijuana, meth and cash.

Now, the 21-year-old is facing a handful of drug charges and is being held on a half million dollars bail.

Allentown police responded to an apartment in the 1400 block of East Tremont Street shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 to look for the suspect in a hit-and-run wreck. An officer found Manuel D. Garcia in a bedroom closet, trying to hide behind a laundry basket and hanging clothes, according to court records.

Records indicate Garcia was hiding in his bedroom, but records also list an address in the 700 block of Pawnee Street in Bethlehem.

Police said they noticed drug paraphernalia in the room consistent with drug dealing, including a digital scale, wax packets and rubber bands. Authorities requested permission to search the room and allegedly found "several large bags" of what they believed was K2. Police found a grocery bag under the bed, two bags in a coffee container and another bag in the back of the closet.

Police said they found 18 wax packets of heroin just over 1 gram of methamphetamine under the clothing hamper, and unopened packet of Suboxone in a shoe on the shoe rack and about $440 in cash.

Court records don't specify whether Garcia was the suspect in the hit-and-run police were there to investigate in the first place.

Police charged Garcia with two felony counts of possession with intent to deliver and misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested Sunday and arraigned Monday morning by District Judge Patricia Engler, who set bail at $500,000.

He failed to post bail and was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing tentatively scheduled for Oct. 24.
