A proposed state law that would grant immunity to people who report drug overdoses in Pennsylvania took an important step forward Tuesday.

The House Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would bar authorities from prosecuting someone who seeks help for an overdose victim.

Officials in support of the bill say it will save lives.

They say a guarantee of immunity might get a person who feared prosecution to help someone who overdosed.

The proposed legislation is now moving to the full House for a vote.
