Hundreds Turn Out Against Swingers Club

Zoning Board Denies Request To Open In Emmaus, Lehigh County

EMMAUS, Pa. - It's a no go for a controversial social club that advertised on swingers web sites.

Last night, the zoning hearing board in Emmaus, Lehigh County rejected the application for Vault Social Club to open on Main Street.

Hundreds packed the Arts Pavilion in the Emmaus Community Park to hear the zoning hearing board's decision.

I was at home one afternoon when they were hooking up their sound system and it will be anything less than quiet, said Paula Henderson.

Many people were opposed the opening of the Vault because it was rumored to be a sex club for swingers.

This is such a family-oriented small town, said Tracy Ruhf. Everyone gets along here. We don't need this kind of garbage. In my opinion, it's like legalized prostitution. I don't want it in my neighborhood.

Business owners, neighbors, and others all spoke out against the club.

Vault owner David Mayi said during the hearing his club is not a sex club.

But he also admitted his website, which has since been taken down, may have been misleading.

I think, unfortunately, there was a misconception of what the club was going to be about and I can understand that, said Mayi.

In the end, the zoning board rejected the application because the club is considered an adult entertainment facility, which is not allowed under law, and because Mayi's lease agreement was not in writing.

The application was also denied because it did not meet other criteria in zoning ordinances.

The town of Emmaus was extremely respectful, said Mayi. They held true to their reputation of being very nice people. I no way meant to disrespect anyone or anything like that. So I feel fine. I have no hard feeling no ill feelings at all.

Mayi said he hasn't decided yet whether to try to open his club in a different location.
